USE OF SFGA GROUNDS, FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT IS DONE SO: AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Safety first! Every shooter has the personal responsibility to make sure that every bullet or shot fired impacts safely in the impact berm/backstop or shot fall area. All shooting shall be initiated from a designated firing line at an approved target, placed in the proper location. If you are in doubt as to the correct firing line, target preparation or placement, you should not be using the range in question. DO NOT SHOOT, contact a range officer.
All NRA Range Safety Rules are to be observed at all times. These will be included with individual range rules posted at each range.
Firearms and associated equipment, such as but not limited to; magazines, ammunition, range bags, tools, scopes, cleaning
materials, etc., are NEVER to be handled or touched when people areDown Range
or in front of the firing line. Before anyone
goes forward of the firing line ALL firearms shall be made safe, unloaded, and cleared. Cylinders unloaded and/or magazines
removed, chamber empty, actions must be open, and firearms shall remain lying on the shooting bench or stand, pointed in a safe
direction, empty chamber indicators shall be inserted into the breech end of the barrel and remain visible, until all persons are
again safely behind the firing line.
Everyone must wear eye and hearing protection while utilizing the SFGA ranges, whether they are shooting or observing.
Never allow the muzzle of your firearm to be raised or aimed over the impact berm/backstop or safety berms. Shooting at the Skeet fields, Trap fields and Sporting Clays locations are exceptions to this rule. Ammunition on the Trap fields, Skeet fields, and Sporting Clays locations is limited to a maximum shot size of #7-1Z lead shot or #7 steel shot with the velocities not to exceed 1350 fps.
The CEASE FIRE or STOP command may be given by anyone. This command should be repeated in a loud and forceful manner until firing has ceased. If you hear a cease fire or stop command you must immediately stop shooting, take your finger off the trigger, keep the muzzle pointed down range or in a safe direction and wait for follow up commands or instructions.
Do not use target stand bases to prop up targets and do not shoot at target stands or ground base supports.
The use of incendiary, tracer, explosive, or armor piercing ammunition is strictly prohibited on all SFGA ranges. The LE / Rental Range Coordinator and or the Chief Range Safety Officer may give special permission, if needed, for above use on LE Ranges.
The practice of manuallyBump Firing
firearms or the use of inserted/attached mechanical or electrical trigger enhancement
devices at SFGA is prohibited. Firing of firearms in a manner that is not within the intended design of that firearm's system is
prohibited at SFGA. Firing a firearm in a manner that does not assure controlled sighting and target acquisition or in an unsafe
manner is prohibited.
Any aftermarket mechanical or electrical device that is attached to or inserted into the trigger/trigger guard area for the
purpose of manipulating the trigger and rate of fire that is not within the original design of the firearm is prohibited on SFGA
ranges. This includes devices described as theAutoglove
, binary triggers, and similar type devices. The use of equipment
or firearms designed forBump/slide Firing
is illegal and prohibited. This prohibition is not intended to restrict any safe
and legal device designed to assist anyone with a physical disability. Any person with a physical disability who requires special
equipment for their firearm must contact the Chief Range Safety Officer or his/her designee for permission for such. Prior
written authorization must be obtained and be on their person.
The use of firearms (bolt action single shot or semi-automatic) chambered for 50 cal. BMG is regulated on SFGA property. Written permission must be obtained prior to use from the Chief Range Safety Officer or his/her designee.
The use of .50 caliber BMG full automatic firearms is prohibited on all ranges without approval of the Board of Directors.
Full automatic rifles (calibers greater than .223/5.56) (With the exception of Pistol Caliber Subguns) may only be fired on the Law Enforcement Rifle Range (LE #2) when that range is not in use or rented. Bursts of automatic fire must be short enough to ensure that none of the bullets will skip off the ground or go over the impact berm/backstop. Members must obtain prior approval from the Chief Range Safety Officer or his/her designee and LE / Rental Range Coordinator for usage of all full auto firearms with the exception of pistol caliber subguns. Full automatic fire is permitted by law enforcement agencies using the Rental Ranges.
Pistol caliber automatic firearms (subguns) and .223/5.56 may be used only on LE Rental Range #3 when that range is not in use or rented. Bursts of automatic fire must be short enough to ensure that none of the bullets will skip off the ground or go over the impact berm/backstop. Please be sure to check the SFGA club calendar for availability of LE Rental Range #3.
LE Rental Range #3 may be used for defensive style shotgun practice when not in use or rented. You MUST bring in your own target frames and targets. All shots must hit the impact berm/backstop. Targets are to be located so that slugs/shot do not strike the ground/floor of the range. There will be a target frame for patterning only that will be maintained by the Utility Range Committee. Please be sure to check the SFGA calendar for availability of LE Rental Range #3.
There shall be no use of alcohol, federally regulated illegal drugs, or other intoxicants of any kind on the SFGA ranges at any time. Any member, guest or event participant using any medication (prescription or over the counter) or intoxicant that might in any way impair his/her ability to shoot safely shall not use any firearms, air-guns or bows. This rule is meant to include the consumption of alcoholic beverages or the use of any other intoxicant on SFGA property while an event is still in progress and the individual is still participating in any form or part of the event. Anyone violating this rule will be disqualified from any event or range use they may be participating in and asked to leave the SFGA property. Violating this rule could jeopardize the safety of individuals or cause damage to equipment or facilities.
The use of SFGA facilities is limited to members and invited guests (limited to a maximum of four (4) guests at one time) **, except as otherwise directed by the Board of Directors. Anyone using the facilities, including guests, is subject to the rules and regulations of SFGA. Members shall be with their guests and will be responsible for their actions and the actions of their guests at all times.
**The Utility Ranges, the Indoor Range and Archery Range are exceptions to this rule, only two (2) guests are allowed at one time on the Utility Ranges and the Archery Range and only one (1) guest on the Indoor Range. Read Utility Range Rule #10 and Indoor Range rule #7 and Archery rule #22.
Guests must sign an SFGA Release and Assumption of Risk Form prior to shooting or attending any events on club property. It is the responsibility of the member bringing in the guest(s) and or the Discipline Chairperson running a shooting event to ensure all guests complete the forms. Release and Assumption of Risk Forms can be found in the entry of the Main Clubhouse and completed forms can be deposited in the designated bin mounted on the wall. Disciplines will make forms available to members and guests.
The purpose of the security gate at the entrance is to ensure that only SFGA members and authorized individuals are allowed onto SFGA property. This is a safety, security, and liability issue for the SFGA as an organization and corporation. A FOB is an electronic device that identifies the member and authorizes entry by opening the gate. All current and up to date SFGA members will be issued a FOB for their exclusive use only.
If you witness a security gate violation, please get the description of the vehicle with a vehicle registration number and report it to the CRSO.
Safety and security is the responsibility of all SFGA members.
Each member shall prominently display his/her membership badge while on SFGA property.
Children under the age of 18 are not allowed on the SFGA ranges unless they are under the direct supervision of an adult who is a member and who shall be responsible for them.
There is to be no digging into or climbing onto any berms for any reason.
Anyone causing damage to SFGA property, equipment, or facilities shall be personally liable for such damage and shall be subject to disciplinary action by SFGA and/or criminal prosecution or both.
SFGA shall not be responsible for personal items, property or equipment left on Club Premises.
Only targets approved by the Board of Directors or Chief Range Safety Officer, or his/her designee may be used on SFGA ranges. No glass, cans, metal, or targets that could cause injury may be used.
All brass shall be swept or picked up after shooting and disposed of in the proper container. This includes all cartridge casings including shot shells or spent casings from any ammunition. Targets are to be picked up and properly disposed of when you are done shooting. Carry out what you carry in. KEEP OUR RANGES CLEAN.
If you have a misfire, squib or a hang-fire, keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction down range. Do not open the chamber until waiting at least 30 seconds up to 60 seconds to be sure that the danger of a hang-fire has passed, then clear the chamber of that round and make it safe. When the firearm has been cleared and is in a safe condition, check the barrel for obstructions and the firearm for malfunctions before resuming firing. Misfired or defective ammo should be placed in the approved containers, marked, and located on each range.
No ground targets are allowed on any range except for the Rental Range with permission of the Chief Range Safety Officer or his/her designee.
Shooters should bear in mind that it is up to them to observe good hygiene habits and wash hands thoroughly after shooting and before eating. Lead residues may accumulate on hands and can cause significant health hazards.
Smoking in club facilities is prohibited. Smoking, eating, or drinking while on a shooting range is a health issue and is discouraged. All smoking materials are to be properly disposed of.
The Chief Range Safety Officer or his/her designee shall have full authority to act on any range safety issue in accordance with approved safety rules. Any member or guest shall immediately abide by any order of the Chief Range Safety Officer or his/her designee. Disagreements shall be brought to the attention of the Board of Directors for resolution. Range Safety Officers are generally at most club activities and working the weekends during the summer and fall months for the convenience and safety of the membership. They can be identified by their bright yellow RSO hats.
All formal training, including police-type training, is limited to the Law Enforcement / Rental Ranges, and prohibited from any other ranges unless prior approval from the Chief Range Safety Officer or his/her designee and/or the Board of Directors has been granted.
No shooting shall commence on any range prior to 0800 (8:00 am) or continue after sunset except on lighted ranges. All shooting shall end by 2100 (9:00 pm) No firing on Club ranges after 1900 (7:00 pm) during BOD meetings or general club meetings, usually the first or second Tuesday of each month, with the exception of November.
No unauthorized vehicles on any ranges.
Vehicular speeds on club property shall be safe and prudent to the conditions, road, traffic (vehicular & pedestrian), weather, etc., and considerate to not disrupt shooters (dust, noise). Inclusive in this rule is any Personal Utility Vehicle (PUV), such as an ATV, ROV, UTV, Golf Cart or similar vehicle that may be used for maintenance or transportation. MAXIMUM SPEED ON SFGA ROADS & PROPERTY WILL NOT EXCEED 10 MPH.
If any range is to be worked on, maintained, or used for another purpose, the Chief Range Safety Officer or his/her designee shall be notified. There shall be no shooting on any range being worked on, maintained, or used for another purpose. The Chief Range Safety Officer or his/her designee has the authority to close ranges and, if necessary, put signs in place stating such.
Hunting is not allowed on club property.
The 25-yard utility ranges are intended for the use of handguns (pistols & revolvers), and rimfire rifles of .22 and .17 caliber only. Initial sighting of high-power rifles is also allowed, firing no more than 6 to 9 rounds.
All target stands must be set at the base of the berm.
If ALL shooters using a 25-yard range agree, the firing line may be moved closer to the berm. The person closest to the berm shall be the new temporary firing line and all subsequent firing shall be from that line only.
The 50-yard (Range #4) and 100-yard (Range #3) utility ranges are intended for the use of rifles. The primary purpose of the 50- and 100-yard ranges is for accurate target style shooting at those distances. Establishing a firing line forward of the 100-yard firing point on range #3 or forward of the 50-yard firing point on range #4 is not allowed.
Shotguns, firing shot, are NOT allowed on the 50-yard (Range #4) & 100-yard (Range #3) ranges. Shotguns firing slugs or sabot enclosed bullets are allowed on these two ranges.
Patterning for shotguns, with shot, shall be conducted only on Utility Range #2 and LE Rental Range #3 when not in use or rented. Shotguns will be patterned only on a proper patterning target frame designated by the Utility Range Committee.
Airborne or moving ground targets are prohibited on all Utility Ranges. Clay Pigeons are used only in the designated nine-hole target frames provided by the Utility Range committee.
Firing of full auto firearms is prohibited on all Utility Ranges.
Members are allowed to bring no more than two (2) guests at one time. Exceptions may be granted by the Chief Range Safety Officer or his/her designee upon request.
Never allow the muzzle of your firearm to be aimed or raised over the impact berm/backstop or safety berms.
Everyone must wear eye and hearing protection while utilizing the SFGA ranges, whether they are shooting or observing.
Shotguns must be unloaded, and actions kept open until the shooter is in the firing position in stand or on station.
Shotguns must be unloaded, and actions kept open when changing positions, going to or leaving a shooting stand or station and carried with the muzzle pointed forward in a safe direction at all times.
Never load more than two rounds in the shotgun at one time. Exception: At a triple shoot* position during a Sporting Clays event a pump or semi-auto action shotgun may be loaded with three rounds.
Ammunition on the Trap fields, Skeet Ranges, and Sporting Clays is limited to a maximum shot size of #7-72 lead shot or #7 steel shot with the velocities not to exceed 1350 fps.
Be sure you have the correct ammunition (gauge) to match your shotgun. Never carry more than one gauge of shot shells at one time.
The launching of hand thrown clay targets on the trap fields shall be done on the currently designated (Posted)practice field
when Trap is not in use. Said targets are to be thrown in the direction of the 600-yard rifle range lateral berm. Hand thrown
clay targets are also allowed at Sporting Clays on the Five Stand & Wobble Trap fields when they are not in use; care must be
taken to make sure maintenance personnel are not in the shot fall area.
* A triple shoot is three clay targets in the air at the same time.
These ranges are for use by Law Enforcement agencies and Rental customers. They are not for the general use of Club members with the exception of LE #3 when not in use or rented. A rental contract is required with special rules for use of these ranges. These ranges will be the responsibility of an appointee of the BOD and his/her designee.
This range is for precision target pistol and air gun shooting. The only other activities permitted are club-sponsored training classes and organized events approved by the Pistol Committee. Formal competitions, training classes, and other approved events are open to the public. Otherwise, use of the range is limited to SFGA Members who meet qualification standards and requirements set by the Pistol Committee.
Precision Pistol Range use is limited to Authorized Members only. SFGA members wishing to have authorized access to the pistol range for the purpose of training for competition shall first attend a Precision Range Safety Orientation vetting process and certified by the Pistol Committee Safety Officer.
The Pistol Committee or its Safety Officer may suspend or withdraw an individual's access authorization, for cause, at any time. If an individual's SFGA membership is suspended or terminated, their competition pistol range privileges are automatically suspended.
Authorizations are renewed annually on January 1.
The Precision Pistol Range is secured by a Locked chain link fence. Primary access to the range is through a gate adjacent to the Competition Pistol building. Other gates are normally locked and only opened for organized activities and range maintenance. These range access control procedures are safety-related measures.
Access to the range is controlled through special permission enabled on a member's Scarborough Fish & Game Association fob key, which actuates the lock on the entrance gate.
Each authorized member willfob-in
and initiate a registration card upon first entering the range. Registration cards are
required for both (1) any access involving shooting and (2) any non-shooting access exceeding 15 minutes. Registration cards are
audited and compared to the electronic gate (fob) access log. A registration card is required to document the nature of each
fob-in/fob-out.
An Authorized Member who is qualified to supervise junior members admits Junior Members through the usual fob-in procedure and completes a registration card, including the names of the juniors who were admitted to the range.
Authorized members will not admit any individual, other than their own guests and/or juniors under their direct supervision. This prohibition includes admitting other authorized or associate members. Failure to observe this procedure defeats the purpose of the electronic logging system and compromises the intent of these range access controls.
Before leaving the range, each member will complete their registration card and deposit it in the appropriate container. Each member will fob-out and ensure that the gate is secure before leaving the facility.
SFGA rules apply to misuse and loss of fobs.
Precision Pistol Range Gates will not be blocked open except during approved matches and club-sponsored training. Doing so negates the purposes of the electronic gate control system.
A red range flag will be displayed anytime the range is in use as a Hot Range.
Everyone must wear eye and hearing protection while utilizing the SFGA ranges, whether they are shooting or observing, no exceptions.
Target pistols or revolvers, with minimum 4" barrel length and equipped with adjustable target sights or optical sights, are the only firearms allowed on this range. Target-type air guns (pistols and rifles) intended for 10-meter competition and firing .177-caliber pellets at muzzle velocities not to exceed 600 fps are also allowed.

If you are uncertain about the acceptability of the firearm, caliber, or load that you want to use, contact the Competition Pistol Range Safety Officer or his/her designee before use.
Firearms are to be cased ("boxed") at all times when they are not on the firing line. No firearm uncased and on the firing line is considered safe unless the action is open, chamber empty, the magazine (if so equipped) is removed, and an empty chamber indicator is inserted. Loaded firearms shall be under the control of the shooter at all times.
The pistol range firing line is 220 feet long. In order to ensure safe and coordinated activities on the range, individuals are to shoot from firing points in close proximity to each other.
Shooters arriving when other shooter(s) are already set up shall set up no more than two (2) firing points away from the shooters already there. (The Pistol Committee Chairman or Safety Officer may make an exception to this rule for use of the Ransom Rest bench on a case-by-case basis.)
Firing will be from immediately behind the bench that corresponds to the firing point and corresponding target number.
Except for club-sponsored training classes and organized events approved by the Pistol Committee, no firing is permitted from forward of the benches.
Before anyone proceeds down range and when anyone is forward of the red firing line, firearms, and associated equipment, such as but not limited to; magazines, ammunition, range bag, tools, scopes, cleaning materials, etc. are to have been rendered safe and are not to be handled or touched. All individuals not forward of the red firing line will stay behind the yellow safety line.
The onlysafe direction
on the Pistol Range is towards the backstop (impact berm). No shooter may ever release a slide to
chamber a round or close a loaded cylinder unless the firearm is horizontal to the ground and pointed at the backstop (impact
berm). No shooter may ever elevate (point) the muzzle of a firearm above the backstop (impact berm) unless the firearm has first
been rendered safe.
NRA 25- and 50 yardbullseye
Pistol Targets (B-16, B-6, B-8, B-19, and B-38) and 10 meter air pistol and air rifle targets.
Targets must be mounted on target backers.
Targets are to be placed in the center of a target backer, one target to a backer, and targets and backers are to be placed in the metal target frames provided at the range. Target frames are to be installed on the frame holders at the numbered locations on the 25- and 50-yards target lines, only. The exception to this is for air pistol and air rifle targets only which are to be placed at 10 meters in the target stands provided. Multiple target centers may be used only when firing from a machine rest, fastened to the bench at Firing Point 52. All target frames will be returned to racks provided in front of each firing point.
No targets shall be placed on the ground, in or on a berm or backstop, or on the target support structure.
Don't Allow Metal Target Frames to be Shot - If it becomes evident that bullets are striking the target frames or their wood-faced supports, STOP shooting immediately and find out why.
Pick up all spent casings, including rim fire. Deposit unwanted spent brass in the red buckets. Pick up all trash and deposit it in the covered waste barrels. Put duds in the dud box. Do not put duds in the red buckets or waste barrels.
Any damage, whether caused by an authorized member, their guest, or discovered on arrival at the range, must be reported immediately and noted on the registration card. The authorized member shall be responsible for repair of any damage caused by the authorized member or their guest(s). The Pistol Committee will pre-approve any repairs.
The 600-yard range is open to all SFGA Members, and its use is both welcome and encouraged. The following rules shall apply.
It is Recommended that all SFGA Members wanting to use the High-Powered Rifle Range attend a Range Use Safety Orientation. These Orientations will be provided by designated RSOs at various monthly scheduled times. Advanced notice is requested by contacting the Rifle Committee Chairperson or the Chief Range Safety Officer. Those members wishing to shoot at 500 and 600-yards must attend a more detailed Safety Vetting Program provided by the SFGA Rifle Range Committee RSO's. The 600-yard range is for appropriate rifles of an appropriate caliber firing proper ammunition. The 600-yard range is not intended for pistol caliber rifles, short-barreled rifles, rifles without the accuracy or power to impact the target face and impact berm in aimed fire. These types of firearms are prohibited.
Range Use cards will be issued after orientation or upon providing a current classification card. There will be three different colored cards issued. A yellow-colored card, up to 300-Yards. A Blue Card, for longer ranges, listing the specific firearms the SFGA Member is vetted to shoot at 500 and 600-yard lines. When shooting at 500 and 600 yards Blue Card vetted shooters shall only shoot the firearms they have been vetted with and as listed on their card. SFGA Members holding a current NRA, CMP, PRS Classification or Active Military, Reserve Military and Law Enforcement certification with long range qualifications will be issued a Black Card.
SFGA Members utilizing the High-Power Rifle Range must display their specific card, at all times on the range, signifying they have successfully attended either the Range Use Safety Orientation, the Detailed Safety Vetting Program, or are classified as noted above. All issued qualification cards will be valid for a three (3) year period.
Everyone must wear eye and hearing protection while utilizing the SFGA ranges, whether they are shooting or observing. Target Handlers working in the Pits must also wear brimmed hats.
All targets used on the High-Power Rifle Range, at distances of 300 yards or less, shall be paper targets of a type commercially available or equivalent. For 500 and 600 yard shooting, all targets shall be paper and of a type approved by the Rifle Committee. Carriers with backers are provided and hung in the pit area. After placing carriers and targets, un-pin the target on the bottom, hold onto the frame and ease it up, then pin it at the top (if you do not you may cause injury to yourself or damage the carrier). Please take them down, pin the carriers in the down position, and hang the target Carrier on the back wall on the provided hangers.
All persons utilizing the High-Power Rifle Range shall ensure that a Red Range Safety Flag (RangeHot
Flag) is flying from
Rifle Storage Shed and Range entry Flag Poles while firing is taking place. Once all firing on the Range has ended, it is the
responsibility of the last person(s) leaving the Range to lower and stow the flags. The safety flip-sign located on the gate at
the Plt/Impact berm is permanently in place and shall remain in place. Shooters must flip the safety signs located at the 320 and
500 range entrances when firing is taking place and return these signs to thenot in use
positions when shooting is
completed.
On the High-Power Rifle Range, when a firing point at a greater distance than 300-yards is in use, all entrances at shorter
distances, are not to be used and are to be kept closed; (e.g., 320-yard range entrance is to be closed and locked when the
600-yard firing point is in use), and theRange in Use Sign
flipped to indicate the range is active.
Winter Shooting: The 500-yard line is cleared in the winter as are the pits, and available for vetted shooters, with several opportunities per month available for vetting and shooting on our Electronic Target System. It is important that when the range flags are in place you go to the 600-yard line and look down the range to see where shooting is taking place or if a shooter inadverte
